Jeremy,

Thanks for your comments. I will try to address them.

Cebu Aquatics exported marine aquarium fish caught with cyanide starting in the early 1970s. Cyanide fishing spread out from the Central Visayas from Cebu where this export company was based. The trade expanded because of cheap cyanide-caught fish.

Andy Eyas (the owner of Cebu Aquatics) later formed International Seabord (a Chicago-based import company). At least three informants told me about how tightly packed were the fish being imported by this company. Lots of dead fish were observed by these informants in the import facility. When airfares were cheap, it paid to pack the fish tight. The survivors still paid for those that died and for the air freight. Perhaps, the fish you bought from International Seabord fell into this category.

As far as your claim that the mortalty on the fish you bought from me matched that of 104th street, I have data from one of my Tampa-based buyers that indicates otherwise. They bought net-caught fish through me and also from one of the LA-based trannshippers. Their average mortality on fish bought through me (about 8 shipments) that came from Les (Indonesia) was 10% lower than the average mortalty (8 shipments) that came from the LA-based transshipper.

The village of Les cooperative (Bahtera LeSatari) routinely ships to Canada (Vancouver), to Germany (Frankfurt) and to Switzerland (Zurich). The duration of these shipments is usually under 35 hours. For most shipments there are no complaints and they do not claim any DOA.

In the case of the fish received in Tampa and also those forwarded to you (from Miami) the duration of the shipment often exceeds 50 hours. So, there is a higher mortality. I forwarded fish to you from Miami to Providence, Rhode Island. The mortality you reported was usually about the same as that found by the store near Tampa. You were given full credit on all of the fish you reported to have died (including both the DOA and a 5 day DAA).

After you stopped ordering fish, Bahtera LeSatari increased the size fo the bags and the ratio of oxygen to water in the bags was increased for fish being shipped to Florida. This combined with the use of chemical additives in the bags has markedly reduced the DOA and the DAA is almost non-existant.

Peter,

The size of the sample ( dealings with very few dealers) you are considering can not be considered as representative of an industry that deals with thousands of fish in a single day.

Jaime, We seem to have drifted away from the topic of the thread (overexploitation and mortality of Banggai Cardinalfish). Perhaps you should start a new thread about your last comment. Please also explain what your meant by you last posting.
