Does anyone have any suggestions on what kind of base rock to get? I read somewhere that totally dry rock isn't recommended...can't remember why. Is that true? I've seen pieces of rock just lying around in LFS stores, pretty cheap. I want something to be in the back of the main live rock for my upcoming tank upgrade. So, is that stuff ok or what?? And at what point will it become live rock - or will it?

once you put anything in you tank for some time, it will become live as the bacteria and small animals start living in it. this applies to rock and sand as well.
you want the rock to be porous.
