Any one use the battery powered water pumps to drain/fill their tanks? I want to use one when I move my tank but wanted to get feedback on their usefulness and whether they are safe to use in our reef tanks.

I'm talking about the pumps that operate on 2 D batteries; any experience out there with them?

Thanks

Do you have a link? I can't imagine a pump operating with 2 D batteries to have either much flow or can sustain high flow for more then a couple minutes (max of about 20 amps at 1.5V).

There are some bilge pump that use 12V batteries, but the only pump that work with 2D cells are air pump. I will be interest to know about the water pump too.

(moving water is very energy consuming, esp. if you need to pump it up.)

Here is a link:

I had one before and used it during water changes to pump water from my mixup container back into the main tank.

I plan on using it to refill the main tank after moving it from my basement to my main floor great room. I will be transporting 5gal at a time up from the basement and will empty the 5gal container using the battery-powered pump.

The batteries don't last incredibly long, but for a 46gal tank like mine it does the job; and I don't have to fuss with plugging/unplugging a powerhead or pump to move water

Was just wondering if anyone else has used these, they are hard to find in retail stores (HD used to carry but no longer) but you can get them online.

I see. The pump is not that powerful (well, it is only 3V), but if you use rechargeable batteries, it ain't too bad.

There are a lot of all-plastic hand-operated transfer pump out there that is very similar. At least you know there is no bad copper or metal part in there that can corrode or poison your tank if you can confirm it by looking inside.
