I am just "considering" becoming a wholesaler. I would not discriminate aginst e-tailers as alot do, infact I would embrace them. (don't need any static for this)
I also would not send out cherrys thru a e-tail front as alot of wholesalers do. Is it possible to set up the fish system in a greenhouse that is about 75% shaded. If not, what size building would be a good base to erect to start. Also what type holding system would you suggest for fish holding, one with a blower driven filter system or a wetdry. How many tanks would be a good base for a start with the fish, ie how many 10, 20 55 gallon tanks. I would just start out small time then expand as needed.
Would I need to supply drygoods as well?

I have been driving to a airport about 1hr away but just watched a fishstore unload a truckload of freshwater fish boxes he transshipped into a airport just 25 min away :) He said he would be interested in salt fish if I started this

I don't consider myself an expert in the industry or any kind of bussiness for that matter, but I think that you really need to sit down and look into where do you want to take your business short and long term. From what I've read so far all over this forum you're just jumping into all kinds of endeavours with this. First you want to frag and aquaculture, then you want to transship, now you want to be a wholesaler. My advice would be to concentrate on 1 thing first, do it right, then diversify.

Also, you intend that the same people that will eventually be your competitors (be it locally or not) give you advice and trade "secrets" for you to be succesful. YOU need to do the homework, by yourself, not be spoon-fed all the logistic for your bussiness. I'm sure most, if not all, of these guys/gals has to start ground up knocking on doors by themselves for many yrs.

I do admire your drive to make your business successful, but IMO you're just all over and setting yourself to fail by trying to do too much, too soon.

Everybody have a great day!!

lol...you forgot I wanted to learn how to be a importer also :)

I like to try to know about all the angles of the trade before I try to set my sail in concrete, the main thing for me is to get a freestanding greenhouse established, this could be possible for me by mid march.
I have a good airport to transship fish and coral only 25-30 mins away from me (now I learned) instead of the hr I was driving.
I have enough space for a wholesale size business but would like to either stick to wholesale or retail instead of both.
I am planning a 20 x 30 freestanding greenhouse, the frame is 1/2 complete already. Any bigger than this would need to be a wholesale business imo.
I can get fish and coral transshiped competitivly enough to sell at a wholesale price.

Though now with this new killer flu, I might stear clear of coral transshipments from Jakarta

Jt - lol, I still got a long way to go. But I have learned alot over the last third of my life
I don't need instant gradification fortunatly, but I feel comfortable saying
my new greenhouse will grow

just don't know what direction, retail or wholesale, since alot of wholesalers seem to be stearing toward retail :?
and alot of retailers seem to be able to sell at near wholesale price, planning a business in this industry is confusing to say the least

Plenty of wholesalers out here on the West coast trying to sell their facilities and businesses.
For 50-65 K you can take one over thats operational.

If it were me, I'd start out by deciding what business I wanted to be in, then I'd beg for a job with someone who was already in that business. That might mean I'd be working for close to minimum wage, and I might have to move for 6 months or so. It's always going to be best to learn from someone already operating.

Anyone who thinks they can throw up a greenhouse and ask a few questions on a forum to start a good business is dreaming.

Don't I remember someone telling you to write a business plan first? I can't figure out why you ask all these questions but are so resistant to actually taking advice? :?:

There's also a great aquarium related site that gives you the "how to set up a fish type business" but, I don't feel like doing someone's homework for him.

Actualy now with the upcoming price hikes and limited cargo space out of Bali for fish and other problems that come with imported livestock from Indo as well as things that may limit their avalibility in the future, at this point imo localized propagation is the best business to lean toward imo

mabey garf is ahead of the game in educating "online"

If you are trying to model your business after GARF, you are clearly clueless and hopeless.

GARF is one of the biggest jokes this hobby has ever seen. They even beat out Albert Thiel which is pretty hard to do.
