Bio wheel- or bio*&^%$

Most of you know my tank on this site already for posting pictures. I have a bio wheel i have had running on my tank for the past year. I would like to know if any one is running a bio wheel or is it pure trash and I should just take it off. Please advise I want to ditch this tonight

Anthony, I would still like to see results from other test kits before you go making changes to a system that has been running beautifully all along!

i would suggest removing it, but if it has been running for a year you might upset the bio-filter in your tank. just be ready with a lot of freshly mixed salt water incase you get a small cycle...

i think i hada small cycle from cleaning up the sump it has ben running for a while thougth

every house i have been to has no bio wheel running at all and i am trying to keep it so simple in my tank so i am going to remove it and see then what happens i have zoos and clams and open brain corals so but i noticed that some of the sps not the caps are suffering and i am growing tires of the games of the nitra. cycle

I did 2 water changes 5 gallons each and the trates were a little high. I took off the bio wheel and I must say i am reciving more light now in the tank.

Ant...ditch the wheel..it becomes a nitrate factory just like bio-balls over time....set-up a refugium if you haven't done so already

Here is what I would do...........


I would get a refugium. A sump with one or one of those Hang on Back fuge's. I would get that up and running and take that biowheel and float it in the fuge for a little while til the fuge is completely established. That is the same as bio ball removal you are supposed to do it slowly so you don't throw your tank into a cycle.

cheif i am doing that now i have the fuge so i tested today and they have droped a littel considering the take off of the wheel

i would use one on a quarantine tank but they are not necessary on tanks with live rock.

It has been taken off, I used to have one in a fish only tank.

ANT I would leave it b/c your tank is doing good and looks good with it so why remove it and why mess things up. if you have high nitrates then remove it
