I’m treating the my 150 gallon display with copper power and prazipro at the same time. I was maintaining copper around 2.0 until I added a gfo reactor and dipped to 1.43 so the cycle starts again. I also did one treatment of prazipro but left my skimmer running in fear water quality would drop so this time around I left the skimmer off and took out the gfo reactor. Just did a 25 percent water change last night and dosed prazi for the second time. When should I notice a difference with prazi in combating black ich I’m afraid it seems to have spread to my sailfin and gem tang as well. Can I confirm this as black ich? The first treatment of prazi didn’t seem to slow it down

The best thing to do and it has worked for me in the past is to QT all of them. I normally would treat the QT setup with PraziPro and copper; I would also leave the tank (main display) fallow for 6-8 weeks. I hope this works.

If it's black ich you should see the black spots raised on the fish body. First you should do a fresh water dip or bath of at least 5 minutes, 20 would be better. This should help to rid some of them. Then treat the tank with Praziquantel (powder), if you can't get the powder use Prazi-Pro. Prazi-Pro is a weak version of Praziquantel so I would double the dosage. Repeat the threatment in about 1 week. Also doing Hypo (1.009) for about a month should rid it from the tank.

The tank is fish only with liverock, I kept it without coral and inverts knowing I’d run into a disease/pest issue. It’s not logical to quarantine as many fish in the tank as there are since I’d need about the same volume of water to house them comfortably

How long would you drop the salinity from 1.025 to 1.009

You want to do it over a number of days. So if you start at 1.025 do a 20% water change, which should bring it down to 1.020. Then every 12 hours do another one, which after the 4 water change you should be about 1.009-1.010. From there do one more to bring it under 1.009. It's very important that you have a good refractormeter and check the Ph, especially as you start to go low, as it's will drop under 8.0. Try to keep it in the 7.8 - 8.0 range.

  • ((1.025*4)+1.000)/5 = 1.020 approx.
Then, after 12 hours:
  • ((1.020*4)+1.000)/5 = 1.016 approx.
After 24 hours:
  • ((1.016*4)+1.000)/5 = 1.013 approx.
After the 4th change:
  • ((1.013*4)+1.000)/5 = 1.010 approx.

If you have access to mixing 30 gallons of salt water I would highly reccomend TTM with prazi and a 30min diluted peroxide dip in between each transfer. It is super effective on ich and you will see 90% of the ich gone by the 3rd transfer if done properly which is only 6 days. It’s much easier on the fish than copper, faster results, and easier than maintaining a certain copper level for a minimum period of 30 days and then restarting if you go below the required concentration.

Little update in the situation. Tuesday I dipped the yellow tang for around 20 min and the gem for about 12 min. While doing so I doubled the dose of prazi in the main tank and I ended up losing both tangs shortly after reintroducing. The rest of the fish were breathing heavily and sitting toward the bottom and this is with the gyre and two power heads in the tank. I turned the skimmer back on to pull back the prazi. The rest of the fish made it and so far I see no outbreak of black ich or regular ich. Learned a valuable lesson not to do too much at one time. I wish I skipped the dip for the double dose to see how they faired and dipped if they still had symptoms. Live and learn
