MR'ers tend to be resourceful, so I figure I would ask here. Does anyone
know where I can find a heavy duty black metal stud, like the one that supports the Soloflex exercise machine? The black 2x4 type bar down the middle of the machine? Typically those bars are hollow in the center.

TIA

I would like to be able to attach my lighting fixture to it, using a bracket that will allow me to adjust the height of the fixture from the top of the tank readily. I don't want to sit the fixtures on top of the tank, nor hang my fixtures from the ceiling.

Thanks for your input Master.

2x4 steel tubing. It comes in different wall thicknesses as well...

I don't know any companies that will sell small quantities.
You should check with a local welding shop or miscellaneous steel fabricator. (they are the guys that build stairs and railings and such)

It's been a while since I dealt with them, but some suppliers in the city that I recall are Thypin Steel, Ryerson Tull, Certified Steel. Again, I doubt they will sell small quantities, but they can probably point you in the right direction.

Even thin steel walled tubes/squares weight alot. Its going to be really hard to find small runs of the super thin stuff. Unless you get real lucky your not gonna find it in a welding shop. Its not a standard material to use and have pieces lying around.

For supporting your lights, I would consider using aluminum tube or angles. They are much lighter, easier to work with if you are cutting or drilling (but not welding) and some hardware stores carry it. They cost more, but will last way longer in the slat water environment.
