*NOTE*- I in no way want all these fish, or think I can potentially have these fish, they are just some types that have caught my eye and have me thinking, Steinhart is a very dangerous place for dreaming
Ok right now as a temporary tank (that's fully stocked and working
) is a 180g, 4' x 3' x 2', skimmer is a BM250 so it's almost too much skimmer for this tank.
Current residents Yellow Tang, Tomini Tang, Double barred rabbitfish, Clown (Red Headed) Fairy wrasse.
Now I do plan on getting another tank, permanent one, in the future that will be larger, current leaning towards 6x3x2, 5x4x2, or maybe even 8x3x2, I've basically found that I like good depth front to back, and these 4 fish I currently have came from a 100g 6x1.5x1.5 and they seem much happier as far as swimming.
Now what I do NOT want is the mindset that "oh I'll be getting bigger so .... " I want some feedback on the current tank as well as future tank.
Tangs - I'd like a couple more at least, maybe not necessarily in the current tank however, although the yellow while I think he is the dominant fish isn't overly aggressive with any of the others.
The Shortlist
Zebrasoma - Probably none due to the yellow
- Purples look nice however, but they're a bit pricy for my taste.
Ctenochaetus - Unsure about these, not quite sure if their temperament are towards others of the same genus as I do have the Tomini.
- Chevron is a definite contender if they can get along, a bit on the pricy side but I like the look as both juvenile and adult, and while not as pricey as a Purple (at least out here) I would be willing to plunk down the coin it
- Kole, the cheap Hawaiian bristletooth, always had a soft spot for them, however if there was only one choice definitely would be the Chevron.
Acanthurus - I know there are some that can get quite aggressive (Sohal, Powder blue...) not sure how the rest react. These are either or, not both.
- Chocolate Yellow Mimic, looks gorgeous as both a juvenile and an adult, unsure how yellow tang would react to the juvenile stage though.
- Orange Shoulder - Again soft spot for them from seeing them is such large numbers (and large...) when snorkling in Maui.
- Powder Brown, kind of on the edge depending if it acts like a powder blue.
Naso
- Naso tang... simple as can be, nice elegant, doesn't ever seem to be overly aggressive however I realize it does get big, and likes to swim.
*note* I'm not saying I want each one of those tangs in my 180 nor my 360/270/whatever future tank, I'm just looking for some input on them.
Wrasse - Pretty fish, I like!
Ideally I wanted to find a "mate" for my clown fairy wrasse, however I have no knowledge of how to dictate color, or even know if "the other" sex even comes in. That being said other wrasses that I'd possibly like
Paracheilinus the flasher wrasse, possibly the more inexpensive kind, my current one hasn't shown any desire to carpet surf, but I'm not terribly picky and the cheap ones are even awfully pretty. No specific one(s) in mind though.
Halichoeres - Kind of leaning away from these because I run a barebottom setup, however I have seen Canary wrasses in the large frag tanks at stores, unsure if that's a long term solution however
- Canary (Yellow "Coris"), is nice, pretty, but again need to know if lack of sand will be a problem
- Radiant - ditto.
Other fish - These I've just been on the look out for, some sort of peaceful color fish that is small and stays small. Note I don't have shrimp in the tank, and while I have thought of it, don't really have a desire at this point (so I know that opens the playing field.
- Anthias - Now this is more my style, there are a few definite contenders in the group as well, being as I'd want a group the pricier versions are out, however there are quite a few that are in the $20 range. However not knowing terribly much about their needs I advice would be welcomed, or at least point me in the direction of some good reading.
- Magnificent Foxface - the foxfaces I've had have been algae eating machines, this is the loveliest looking of them, however I do know the issues with the other rabbitfish, however the one I currently have AFAIK doesn't eat much algae simply has fun gulping air and "farting" (yeah it looks like he does
).
- Also open to suggestions
Ok sorry for the long message so basic things I'm looking for
1: What would be fine to add to my existing 180 (not that I'm going to mind you!)
2: What would be fine to add to my future 270-360
3: Which should I really avoid due to my existing tankmates (keep in mind the size of the tank(s) however)
