I saw a flyer today for the Brookly Aquarium Society having a fish auction October 12. I was curious if anyone had been to their events in the past and what kind of fish and coral you could expect to find there. Also curious if anyone was gonna head down. Im sure there are a bunch of people that would like to make a meet and greet out of an event like this. Personally I will probably check it out.

I was at the most recent BAS meet (first time for me) held at the NY aquarium on 9/14. It appearded that most people were interested in fresh\brackish water fish and fresh water plants? I was pretty impressed with the amount in attendence, about 60 people or so and all seemed pretty nice. As for saltwater, there was a xenia frag, kenya tree frag, some polyps, shrooms, two huge hermit crabs and various fish. Saw a lemonpeel angel go for $10, pineapple trigger $3, app. 10 green polyps on rock for $3, kenya tree frag for I think $9, 30 gallon long tank with full plastic hood and pine stand sell for $55 etc... Some great buys. I bidded on some saltwater but was not eagerly trying to win the bid, as most bags had been sitting for quite some time and water in bags was pretty cold. I will definately try to attend the Oct. 12 meet at the aviator in Floyd Bennett field (only minutes from my house). I can only assume by the advertisement that this Oct. 12 auction will have more saltwater items to choose from then the meet I went to? Even though I didnt buy anything it was nice to be in a place with people that have similar aquarium interests.

It looks like there are some pretty strong opinions about BAS. I was hoping for a convention where I could find something a little out of the ordinary but it appears that a red mushroom would be the hotest thing available. Perhaps the upcoming November convention on long island would be a better spot considering all the sponsors. Its too bad really, I guess I will have to wait for the next MR get together for nice frags.

Its hard to say what will be there until you attend. I didnt see any red mushrooms and I didnt see people go bazerk for any mushrooms that were there. I dont know how some people could say a generic statement when all the live stock is donated and changes each month. Gotta say if there are pople out there that are into discus, there were quite a few real nice ones. But discus is not my interest, but for those that were got some real nice fish at the fraction of retail. If your looking to but a certain item and not take in the whole experience, then BAS may not be the best place for your needs. I'm not pro or con BAS, just my opinion of the one meet I attended so far. I guess what I'm trying to say, is its what you make of the experience . I walked out of my first meet with not one thing in hand after sitting for hours through the auction, but enjoyed the total expierience.

NERAC (north east reef aquarium confrence) Is held at Atlantis Marine World in March '08. It's not as large as MACNA but it's growing as far as vendors and attendence. It's the yearly Fund raiser for LIRA. there were a few frag tanks, (House of FISH & LIRA's own FRAG tank with frags from Donated from Atlantis Marine World's 20000 g reef tank, also Frags obtain from ORA and DR forsterSmith)
There is also A conference coming up Soon At AMW called "RAW" this is a week long event for the "public Aquarium industry". I don't know if it is open to the public though.

If you're looking for a frag swap & some great speakers NJRC is having one on October 27. It's about an hour out of the city.
