Ok so they are probably flightless, which means they can revert to flighted at a certain temperature ( you'll have to google as I dont recall ). As for making new cultures, you'll need containers, culture media, yeast, and excelsior or coffee filters and distilled water ( doesnt have to be RO, boiled is fine ). The media is mixed with water, usually in a ratio of 1:1, allowed to solidify, a few grains of yeast are sprinkled on top and the excelsior ( basically hard shredded paper like material for the flies to crawl on ) is placed in. Then some flies are shaken in, the container is closed and left in a warm spot and within about a week you will have a teeming new culture if everything goes well. You can buy the stuff at the website I posted earlier or google around for others.

actually theres two types of flightless fruit flies...the ones that are made flightless due to temperature during the papae stage, which can revert back to flight and the ones that have genetically impared wings, which can't revert back. I would check with the site to seewhich one they sell, so you won't have to worry about it

The maintenance??? They are low maintenance.. I just cleaned their container's and I keep them on the top of my tank next to the metal halids, every evening I dump about 7 flightless fruit flies in and mist the container's every other day..lol

Sorry to hear. I've been trying to find some phasmids ( stick insects ) to raise as feeders and pets but no luck. I know there are restrictions in interstate sales due to agricultural issues with some species but if you come across any please let me know. Occasionally they show up at an LFS here but way overpriced. The only other place I've seen them is at the White Plains reptile show but I dont know when I'll be going to one.
