I got some chaeto from a fellow reefer here and added it to my new refugium. My tank is about 3 weeks old. About a few hours after being placed in the refugium, the chaeto started turning brown on some part and it seems to release some sort of color that tainted the rocks next to it!

Is something wrong with it?

Thank you, Deanos. I guess I have to remove it from my refugium and do water change.

I guess part of the problem is I've been using tap water and just got a RO DI filter two days ago. I plan to partially remove the tap water by large water change in couple weeks. Now that I have this problem and combined with a new tank (3 weeks), how much water change can I do without hurting the tank's cycling?

Thanks,

Is this the same Cyano bacteria?

Or is it coral line algea? This is from my 35 G tank, set up a week before the 90 that has the red slime algae in the refugium. It's also using tap water!

In a new tank I wouldn't be particularly worried about excessive algal growth. It's going to happen, whether we like it or not. I'd concentrate on providing good husbandry. With that it will resolve itself over time.

Thank you for advice, everyone. I saw KathyC's thread about red slime algae and she used the light off tactics to cure it. I turned off my light for the whole day today, will stay off for the next 2 days. I've been running the RODI trying to get about 30 gallons for the 90 tank. It's been running the whole day and I just about 20 G!

I'll continue to change water twice weekly, hoepfully the problem will go away.

I thought it was bad, it made almost all of my handful Chaeto turning red and tainted the rocks next to the chaeto red, and spots on the sand as well. I turned the light off for the entire day yesterday, this morning I checked the Chaeto is becoming green again.

I'll keep the light off for another 2 days. In the meantime, I'm running the RODI for good water. Planning to change 1/3 of the water today.
