I suppose you are referring to my tank feature. It is essentially a separate compartment used to grow Chaeto, much like a refugium, but I didn't want to use that word because it implies the primary function is to cultivate and pods and such which is not the prmary intent on my system .
Big Time, I look up to you man. Who needs a skimmer when you have a chaetomorpha chamber. How long has your tank been running?? How many water changes a month??
I do not recommend people start yanking their skimmers and growing some Chaeto instead. I have been in this hobby for a long time and am experimenting with some new techniques that I can't really talk about in detail for proprietary and other reasons.
Do you need a skimmer for a successful reef tank? Obviously not, but it is still the most straightforward and proven approach for large numbers of hobbyists to succeed.
Water changes are ideally, @40g. monthly, but I am lazy and it often is more like every 6 weeks.
Hey Pattreef I'm throwing away my skimmer as I type. lol.... One thing I notice in this hobby that people tend to complicate things a bit too much with skimmers phos[hate reactor, calcium reactor and a bunch of things I can even name.
I don't run chaeto in the main but when I trim I put what I took away into the main for a day or two, I can't bring myself to simply throw away all those pods so I hope some get into the main.
