This came from an old aquarium book and was an instruction for making your own salt water for a marine aquarium, pre the availability of commercial mixes:

In 100 ltrs of distilled water, dissolve:
2765g NaCl (iodine-free cooking salt)
692g MgSO4.7h2O (crystalline magnesium sulphate)
551g MgCl2.6H2O (crystalline magnesium chloride)
65g KCl (potassium chloride)
25g NaHC03 (sodium bicarbonate)
10g NaBr (sodium bromide)
5g Na2HPO4 (sodium phosphate)
1.5g SrCl2 (strontium chloride)
0.5g KI (potassium iodide)
About 1 litre of the 100 ltrs should be kept aside and used to dissolve 145g CaCl2.6H2O (crystalline calcium chloride). This should only be added to the main solution when all other ingredients have been dissolved.

Note that trace elements aren't included.

Hope that helps.

Does anybody know of a site that lists the chemical make-up of natural seawater? I am adding SPS corals regularly and want to make sure that I maintain the correct levels. Thanks for your help.
