My tank is here in my apartment in new york. I have been leaving the a/c on ALL THE TIME!! I just got my first electric bill and it is scary... i realize that even if i continue this way i will have paid the electric company for a chiller in less than four months. I have a 55 gallon tank, with a twenty gallon sump. I guess I have about 45 gallons in the total system.

Suggestions? Obviously money is a factor, so is space.

for 45 gallons I bet one of those small $200 flow through chillers would be fine.

No idea what it costs to run though, should be able to figure it out by how much watts it uses.

Some of those small chillers only bring the temp down to room temp... which IMO is useless. Im looking for a chiller for cheap too, for a 30 gallon coldwater marin tank. Im having some trouble finding one for under $500 that is gonna be of any good...

One of the problems with chillers that people sometimes overlook is that the heat taken out of the water from the tank has to go somewhere.

So, if your apartment is hot without AC, adding a chiller that does not exhaust its heat outside of the apartment will only make you hotter.

I would rather be comfortable myself

nope.. chillers bring the temp down well below room temp. if this wasnt so then our AC units would be pointless.
as well as our refigiators .. and freezers... and ...

10percent off chillers at docterfostersmith on chillers

thats what i was refering to .
knuck is kinda right. but to cool water using air is alot harder then to just directly cool the water.

the hot air coming out of the chiller.. and there will be alot. is far less then what your ac unit produces in heat. blablabla
to sum it up.
cool tank with chiller cool chiller with ac. it will save $$ compared to running only ac. and now its my time to shut up
