cleaning sump not able to siphon

How do you folks clean the dtritus out of your sumps? With it being below the tank and virtually on the ground there is not way to create and maintain a siphon.

What are some ways to get the gunk outta the sump??

once every six months I turn my main pump off. drain the sump using a powerhead, then use a shopvac and suck out all the garbage....

about a 20minute process.

I'm with the LA lawman , I used a small shopvac once a month myself. Got it on sale and ONLY used it for the tanks. Made sure to rinse it out well afterwards and "suck" up some plain water to keep the salt corrosion down to a minimum.

I've never cleaned my sump. :lol:


Never thought to even look down there.


Gosh...it's been over 2 years since I did anything with the sump but take out my skimmer to clean it. I have a bunch of rock where it is hard to reach and I bet there's a 2 inch thick layer of detritus back there. :lol:
