I was feeding my fishies this morning, nothing out of the usual....and as one of the clownfish swam by the carpet it became attached and was quickly enveloped. This horror unfolded right before my eyes and as I stared in disbelief all I could think was 'I've got a clown eating anemone' :(

WOW! We had clowns hosting in it before the show. Are you feeding any silversides?

Hi Russ, I feed it alternatively either 1 silversides or 5-6 whole mysids, 2-3 times per week. It hasnt moved from where I originally placed it...basking in the center of a 175W MH/4T5 light source. It is about a 1/4% larger than when I got it and seems very, very happy :tub:

Were your clowns hosting it before?

What kind of Clowns were they?

If they have never hosted the anemone or hosted a different anemone their slime coat may have not adjusted to the new nem.

When i got my Gigantea from 1ucky my clowns would get stung but immediately started eating tentacles off the anemone and hosted it nearly 12 hours later.

Haddonis Are Aggresive

I would be careful i might even try and see if you can get clowns from russ that are already hosting an anemone.

Sorry to hear sometimes i wonder if the whole raising them without anemones can sometimes hinder the production of the slime coat needed to protect them.
I wish ORA would house their growout systems with anemones. I could garuntee that people would little to no wait time for thier clowns to host.

Boozeman sorry to hear of your loss. We lost four clowns in total to our anemone. All hosting for several weeks before hand with no problems, typical clown hosting anemone behaviors were viewed. One day there the next gone. Several other fish would get stuck to him in passing (but would quickly swim to get off) so they seemed to steer clear of him.

We fed our anemone a few times a month. Silversides and also krill.

I have been told that the clownfishes possibly weren't healthy. That it is impossible that an anemone will not eat a clown fish that is hosting it.

Seemed though that after we added the anemone shrimp was when it all started. He never bothered the shrimp and even when we gave him to his new home.. the shrimp was still in it. Half the time sitting right in the middle of it. (anemones mouth was four times the size of the shrimp).

Our clowns, both pairs would feed the anemone, nip off the dead tips... do all the good things of communal living. I guess some anemones just have a taste for fish.
