I totally agree with your assumption that water problems would affect the entire tank. That is why I didn't really stress about the parameters, but it was time to check them anyway, so I did.
I thought it might have been the frogspawn, but I was not convinced that it could have taken out the entire mat... But yes, that does seem like the likeliest theory....
When I look at the pics I see cyano and bubble algae which indicatEs less tHan ideal parameters. I disagree that the isolated decline rules out water qua.ity. Some things are more sensitive to some things than others and what those things are can vary quite a bit from species to species. The Euphyllia is also an interestng possibility. I'm still voting gremlins, however.
did you notice and white dots on the polyp stalks? thinking zoa pox?
If not, I second the frogspawn theory. my frogspawn melted some zoa's that were just barley within reach of it. however it did not clean off the rock like your picture shows. it left a grey dead looking matt on the rock then when touched easily peeled away. leaving behind the bare rock like in your picture.
You might want to get a doctor to look at that Randy.
The only thing I can think of is your cove polyps crapped out and made a mess of the surrounding coral. And yes those pesky cloves will destroy the Coraline under it if they have been there for a while. As to why they crapped out my bet is on the Butler with the frying pan in the library.
if it's the gremlins then you have a big problem.....remember the two rules....never get them wet and never ever feed them after midnight......lol.
i third the froggie killing the polyps and then things just snowballed. i have froggies, hammers, and bubbles that killed off my cloves, zoa's and paly's with their stingers....even though they were at least 6" away.
the cyano is just area where there's not enough flow plus high nutirents.
I think we still have a lot to learn about cyano. From what I have read there are times when it affects corals and fish. The idea that it is only in low flow areas, well I have had it in places where there was a direct flow within inches. Recently I had some on the glass that would not come off even by rubbing it. I had to use a razor, and no it was not coraline.
Maybe it was the frogspawn. I have a 3 year old nice peacefull candycane and all of a sudden I see these long sweeper tentacles in the morning. I did add some hammers so maybe it didn't like it.
