In browsing through older discussions, a comment was made to the effect that SPS fans don't believe that multiple LPS corals can be kept together in a reef. What is the veracity of that statement???

Though my specimens are still small, I've currently got bubble coral, euphyllia, hammercoral, tubastrea, cataphyllia, montipora capricornis, actinodiscus mushrooms, & palythoas in my 95 gallon tank. I've just recently up-graded my lighting to a 48" AquaPro by Coralife with two 250w HQI metal halides, 4 lunar LEDs, two 96w true actinics, and two 420nm compact fluorescents.

I just splurged and ordered several acropora millepora frags as well as favia and heliofungia. I'd like to add some xenia in the future along with ricordea, sinularia, lobophytum, nephtheis, nemenzophyllia, blastomussa, welsophylia, cynarina, caulestria, turbinaria and a scolymias. That'll cost a bloody fortune!   8O

Is this an incompatible mix?? (I'm good at chasing the horse after it's outta the barn -- my piscine livestock have spent 8 weeks in a 46 gallon "quarantine" tank after an outbreak of ich!!!! :( while the display tank has been "fallow" -- but would prefer to avoid mistakes).

Advice is appreciated!

Thanks
Candy

Not true. You can keep LPS and SPS together. I do and have in the past. You need to keep in mind that most if not all LPS have sweaper tentacles that can sting and kill SPS coral. Give them some room and that will be taken care of.

The other issues is that LPS do not require the same level of flow as SPS. High flos can cause them to not open fully or flat out rip the flesh off the LPS. They need to be in the lower flow sheltered areas of your tank.

Light is also an issue. LPS do not require as intense a light as SPS. They need to be kept lower in the tank.

Good luck.
