Cryptic refugium?

Can a dark cryptic refugium be more beneficial then growing cheto?

I wouldn't know but the purpose of having a fuge IME has been to offset pH during the night hours, as well as grow macro algae unless of course you are dosing vodka etc. IMO, that would just be adding water volume and place to set your unwanted equipment from the display.

The danger of the cryptic section is the nutrients will get locked up in the sponges. If you have a die off all the nutrients will be released. Besides the extra volume and ph balance, a fuge allows you to export those nutrients by removing the algae. If you have the room you can always do both.
