Cutting acrylic sheet....with a handsaw

Is this doable? I don't have any power tools, only a 12v drill. I need to make a patch for a bulkhead hole in my skimmer box. You know the mantra - measure twice, then drill.....yeah well . Anyhow, will a hacksaw blade be good enough to cut a piece of 1/4 to cover a 1" bulkhead hole?

Yes, since you aren't trying to make a joint out of the hacked edges.

You're glueing flat surface to flat surface, right?

I did it with a fine tooth hacksaw. The cut was about 4 feet long, and I have a sore arm for 4 days.

If you are patching with the flat surface, as Louey says, it is fine.

Yes, I'm just putting a patch over the hole on the inside. No joints. I'm going to use weld on 16 and a couple clamps to hold the piece in place.

if it's 1/4" you should be able to score it and snap it. Make sure you score it pretty deep.

If you have a diamond tipped grout remover tool you can score acrylic very deep without much work. I have cut 3/16" material and built skimming boxes etc. this way. 1/4" is tough but for a patch it will work.

Thanks all. I used my trusty hack saw. Cut through it like butter - well kinda . Patch is in place and looking...well, like I'm glad its hidden from view. Drilled the new hold and installed the bulkhead. Little bit more to do, but almost finished.
