Just looking for some ideas. I get cyanobacteria no matter what I do, I have a refugium, cheato grows like crazy, I run phosban and esv carbon, have 2 ecotech mp10s, and do a 10 percent water change weekly, I have a reef octopus skimmer, all in a 50 gallon tank. I feed fish every other day one cube of brine shrimp or mysis. Why the hell do I still get cyno? Tank has been running for 4 years.

Well its hard for me to say if it is working for a long period of time because it just seemed to go away after years of dealing with it but since i got my reef octopus 3000 which is rated 3 times for my system and running kalk in my ATO. My cyano has finally been calming down ALOT compared to what i have had.

Light are on from 6 to 6 but on high for 4 hours, I've had them on less but it made no difference. Now can one cube every one day have a lot? I have a purple tang, a wrasse and 2 clown fish, they devour it all!

How many cubes you use in a week to feed your fish? Most people like me feed a half cube or less of frozen food once a week only on Fridays.

Too much nutrients in the water.I prefer feed fish everyday with 1/2 cube then 1 cube every other day in one shot and try to give them 1/2 cube and some algae sheet, do two big water changes and shut light out for 2-3 days,

I feed my fish daily. This keeps them healthy and my corals also.
I don't believe in not feeding to hold back algae and bacterial issues.
For algae, you need a good export system.
For bacteria such as cyano. You need to clear the tank if it.

Fish live to do 2 things, preocreate & eat. I will never understand people who don't feed daily :(

Cyano is in the air/water - there is no escaping it. Imo cyano isn't necessarily an issue you can 'fix' by finding the cause, as for many, that cause is unidentifiable. If you are doing everything right, sometimes you just need to bite the bullet and address the symptom (advice that I rarely give!)
Chemi Clean makes an excellent red slime remover - just be sure to FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY :)

Want are you using for your biological to grow good bacteria. Do you have LR, sand in your tank. Are you changing your carbon monthly. Are you running pellets? Are you adding vinager? All of there's will cause cyano to grow. Best thing is too add bacteria to your tank. So many company's sell them. That will help with siphon just top layer where cyano is on. Try not to take to much water out. Easy on water changes. That can by doing more harm then good. Your feeding isn't doing it. Over feeding will cause your phosphate to go up. Controlling your nutrients will help. But that's not the cause.. You need to get to root and that's got to do with bacteria and you need balance and stable right amount of bacteria in your system.

someone once told me when i had that same issue that its just a temporary solution ,but this is what i did and i eradicated cyano from my tanks!!
i run my lights from 12 pm slowly climbing till 3 pm and then its lights out at 9 pm , i feed my fish 2 times a day sometimes, alternating from flakes to mysis and i run both carbon and gfo!!! i got rid of my cyano issue by going a full week of lights out!!! only turning them on for an hr a day for feedings, this was not a bandaid but the solution to my cyano problem

As for fish feedings and high phosphates, (If that is your problem) I reccommend you feed your fish pellets. Dropping some in little by little, your fish will consume immediately and no leftovers, like with flakes. God I hate flakes......huge mess
