went to my lfs, aquarium conservation and what does he have other than a 30L tank with seahorses galore! absolutely amazing tank! best ive seen in a while, better than any reef. but anyways, he was running an eheim canister but also had a sponge filter in the back covered in whatever its covered in. what problems are assosciated with sponges. mine is starting to grow plants on it, not algae but some other kind of plant thing, looks pretty cool, not sure of what it is. should i just let it continue to grow? clean it off? remove it?

thanks all

Sponges have a habit of producing nitrates if they're not cleaned very regularly (due to the degradation of whatever debris gets caught in them). I wouldn't use them in a reef tank.

sponges get clogged fast and they leach stuff back into the tank when they are clogged, unlike skimmers that remove stuff for good.
