I made a homemade sump for my 36 gallon tank I made it out of a 10 gallon fish tank is this big enough. it has a 660gph pump please any info appreciated thanks John

I am new to salt. keep many african cichlids(1500 gallon fish breeding room)I have a section where tank drains to sump with protien skimmer in the same section then a bubble trap then goes to a section with live sand rock and cheato then overflows into a section where the pump is to return to the tank. any suggestions welcome very new to saltwater got this design from another site. thanks John

here a couple of pics if this is not a good system please let me know! one sections overflow and protein skimmer,then the bubble trap and then area for live sand, rock and cheato then return pump area overflow pipe has a sock and overflow has sponge filter on it (on the drain pipe) thanks John

The return section is set to be to high when your system is off there is nowhere for the water to go but on the floor. The actual flow to your tank is probably 400 GAL/hr considering head pressure. When your system is off mark your display then turn the pump on and mark the difference. multiply that measurement x length x width (in inches) and divide by 231 that will give you actual gallons of displacement. you can use the same formula to establish the capacity of your return section (don't forget to consider your skimmer column and a 15-25% buffer for plumbing and variations in sump water level
