I have 400w HQI along with 2x75w actinics... thats 550w of light over a 24 inch aquarium.

I know that I can keep absolutely anything I want to in my tank, as far as lighting goes, but is it an overkill? Could I be just as successful with 240w +actinics?

What do you guys think? What advantage do i have over a tank with say only 400w of light (mh and vho)? What disadvantages can you see.

Just reassessing some things.

thanks for your opinions.

I dont think you have too much lighting, but the biggest disadvantage in my opinion is heat and power consuption. If this is not a problem with you then I would say go for it! Is this going to be an SPS/Clam tank?

What K is the halide - 10k 14k 20k? If its a high kelvin bulb like a 14k or 20k I'd say you're fine. 10K might be a bit too much unless it was SPS/CLAMs only.

I think that you are wasting a little energy. :) If you had a lower wattage bulb in there, then your lights wouldn't have to be so high up and you'd probably get the same 'amount' of light in there. I think a single 250W would be good, in my opinion. ;)
