Do skimmers get worse with age

Hello I'm currently looking for a in sump skimmer for my new 75 gal I want a really good skimmer but I don't have 400-500 bucks to spend on a new one does a skimmer lose it's effectiveness as it is used for a few years ??
Looking for Nassau county area willing to spend 200$ for a great used skimmer pending answers to my question!

however i have notice pumps go weak after time. well certain ones. Mags i have never had issues with. lol

No skimmers don't get worse with age only the person who owns it does. :O LOL. As 2slo4me stated, pumps may go bad after awhile of continuous use (impellor, shaft, the O ring seals on the Protein skimmer get hard and brittle or calcium buildup occurs).They user gets lax and comfortable decide not 2 maintain the cleansiness of the protein skimmer because its working fine. Thus after time making its use ineffective. Prevention.. do inspections yearly. JMO....
