I am trying to set up a fish only tank and did not want to use a wet/dry because I don't have the room. My question is can I use a canister type filter with bio-balls and would it work as a biological filter?

Thanks in advance...

I would say you can use just about anything submerged for a biological filter even plastic hair curlers LOL. Bioballs would work submerged but not as efficiently , I think due to the fact that they would not be exposed to the air as in the trickle filter thus less oxegen for the bacteria. They make different kinds of media just for canister filters ...like ceramic rings ... a sponge works well and you can rinse it out to get the detrius off while maintaining the nitrifying bacteria..

Good Article Noodle...

Thanks Chief & Noodle. Let me run to the toy store and buy some plastic army men. Which branch of our Military would you recomend Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy???LOL.

Now to be serious. To answer the ? I was planning to use Bio-balls in a fluvel 203 filter just for biological filtration and adding another fluvel 203 for chemical and mechanical filtration and I am hoping this would do the trick. This is for a small 20 gallon tank.

Marines obviously, navy would be my second choice.
