Does mysis shrimp go bad?

Hi guys,

I just bought some mysis shrimp from petland discount because petco was all out.

When I thawed the shrimp out in some tank water it smelt really bad. Haven't experienced this before...do you think the shrimp is bad? Does frozen mysis shrimp expire?

I didn't feed the fish with it yet, what do you guys think?

It can go bad and smell. They probably let it defrost, it went bad, and then it was frozen again.

wait a minute- most of that stuff is bad when you got it from the lfs. the corals and fish shouldn't mind. i wouldn't toss it. i mean, fish and corals don't get food poisoning!

Good question. I was wandering the same thing as I was wittling away at my giant block of mysis I got from a house of fish group buy quite a while ago.

What is the freezer life of this stuff?

I have yet to buy mysis that didn't stink, that said, if its beyond bearable there may be a problem.

I noticed that if i keep mysis frozen for a while after its defrosted it floats..thats usually a sign to buy more

Border09, why throw it away? I'd take it back to them, and let them know they are selling bad stuff!!! If no other reason, but to let them know that we do care what we feed our animals.

I also buy the big blocks of food. What I do is that I let it thaw out a little (not all the way), then I take my butcher knife and slice it into thin slices which I then pack into smaller zipper bags. Makes feeding so much easier. I do this with both mysis & cyclopeeze.
Oh, and Chemchef's home made food I don't have to do nothing but thaw, and feed.
