The first one didn't go so great I ended up with a pretty decent size chip. The second one went much better. I guess there is a learning curve... At least these are just pass throughs to the external overflow box. I couldn't finish the other six I have left to do since it was getting late and it was pretty noisy, I didn't want to annoy my neighbors. Hopefully tomorrow I can finish them up and they go ok.

Would it be better to drill from the inside out? My holes are getting better but obviously where the hole saw comes out is rougher than where I drill in from. The first tank I did from the outside in.

Yes that is what I did. With the first hole I didn't have enough tape so it caused a pretty good size chip. If I were using a bulkhead there it probably wouldn't work without repair but since I am not it will be ok. The other holes having been coming out better. I am almost done with the first tank (4 holes) but my drill needs recharging to finish the last one. Then I move on to the second tank (4 more holes). That is why I was asking if maybe it wouldn't be better to go from the inside since it is a 40 breeder and the drill would fit.

House of Laughter,
what is your specific technique with using the dremel? I would like to know how you do it. Are you first drilling a hole with a normal drill and diamond core bit, then using the dremel to polish the hole? I'm not following.

HGC,

I use a diamond core bit with a putty resevior around where I M drilling. Inevitably, the hole is slightly deeper on one side than another. As soon as I see that water come through where the core bit is drilling, I stop using the core bit and swith to the dremel.

I clip a small airhose tube on a large glass of water and tie a knot at the end so the gravity siphon only allows a drip or two per second. I put than in the putty area where the dremel will make contact and dremel with one hand and guide the drip with the other working the dremel bit up and down traveling no more in distance than the dremel bit has diamond coathing. I work my way around the already cut channel with the drmel until the hole falls into the towel I placed below to catch the excess water dripping.

Hope that helps, if I get another drill request, I'll video it and post accordingly.

HTH,

House

I just finished my first tank (4 holes). One more tank to go. Seem to be doing better. Still nervous but much better then the very first hole. Im going to have to wait until I get home a little earlier to start back in on it.
