They are fantastic pumps and your tank will certainly benefit from them. Are they worth the money? That is a little more difficult to say and dependent upon your particular situation. There are less pricey options available as well, though unlike some ( they'll chime in shortly I'm sure) I would not say they are equivalent.

so in short your question is will other less costly powerheads give you what you need ? if so then yes, there are alot of powerheads that will do the job. For me the two biggest reasons ive kept vortech is i love the small foot print inside my tank and no wire's in my tank. plus no other powerhead offers the features { complete amount of features }

+1. I've had vortechs ever since the mp20. I currently run 4 mp 10wes on my 80gal. Complete chaos!

Personally, I wish I went with Tunze 6095's instead of Ecotechs. They're a lot more aimable to create just the right flow you want.

If you have unusual and interesting aquascape that becomes important. If you have just a pile of rocks near the middle and back, the Ecotechs work great.

The other thing is, Ecotech pumps sticking out of the side of your tank look like tumors. On the back it's not so bad but on the sides it looks like warts.

There are plenty of power heads that do the same thing- questions is do you want a Hyundai or a Cadillac, if I could afford it I would go with the caddy.
Now both cars will get you to point a, but do they drive the same and look the same.
Decision is yours.

I personally like having warts on the outside of my tank rather than inside taking away from the view.

I'm very satisfied with my Mp 10 would highly recommend it also no extra heat in the tank for my tank it made a huge difference.

Except the Tunze nanostreams are only a tiny bit bigger than the Ecotechs inside the tank. With smart management, cables are not a problem and within 2 months, you'll have corraline growth on them which hides the cables.

sorry to say my tunze 6055 which are one of the smaller are way more noticeable in a tank then the vortech, tunze puts more of a stream flow which i think it great if you have a longer tank { i think tunze makes the longest lasting pump } but if your under 3' length the wide band of flow of the vortech is hard to beat

In smaller tanks where the relatively size of the powerheads is more noticeable, I would agree the tunze seems bigger.

The 6055 is a narrower stream than the 6095 by far. However, I really don't think the flow of my MP10s are very wide at all.

+1 you can't go wrong with mp's or tunze.
i have 6105's, personally i like them better on the back wall rather then sticking out the sides. you can point them where you like and they come with 2 outputs one is a wide flow.
