Anyone have one or have any experience with them? I am specifically looking at this pump: http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/pro ... 181;pcid2=

It't rated for 2400 GPH. I want to use it as a return pump from my sump to the display tank. The display tank is 125 gallons. Would this be big enough or should I go with the next size pump that does 3600 GPH. I know that they both will do less then what they have stated. My overflow can handle over both of them so that won't be a problem.

I have used Danner Magdrive 9.5 pumps for years without any problems.

As for the flow through you sump, there is no reason to put more water through your sump than what your skimmer needs to skim efficiently.

Of course if this is your only source of flow, then you would need a lot of flow. 2400 GPH still gives you almost 20 times tank volume turnover per hour.

What kind of livestock do you plan to keep?

Currently its FOWLR. I plan on switching it over to a reef slowly. I really want more flow into the tank so maybe I should then just consider getting more powerheads and put them directly into the display?

I would.

Tunze Streams are a nice way to increase flow.

There is a new product coming out in a few months too, called VorTech's. They supposedly do everything that a Tunze Stream does but wirelessly, and comsuming less power and with less heating of the water. You may want to look into them as well. There is a long thread here on RDO about them. Do a search and enter "Vortech".

I'm also using a Mag 9.5 on my new reef and so far am happy. I did set up a tank for a guy a couple of weeks ago using a Mag 24 and it was pretty loud (admittedly the guy had an open stand so you could hear everything).. Unless you need that flow, go with something a little gentler. You can get quite good current distribution in the tank using several small powerheads rather than one large pump - and use far less electricity at the same time.

great plug and play pumps. Have heard they are not the best for external mounting. I have a couple mag 7's, a 9 and the 24 all submerged and going good

i've been using mag drives for the last 6 years or so. . . good pumps for the price. i have returned 4 of them though. . . all 4 ended up leaking electrical current into the water, throwing off the GFCI because of the grounding probes I use. 2 of them were in tanks I have set up at a local school so I know its not my wiring. They are really good about exchanging them on the warranty. . . just make sure you keep your receipt! The biggest thing with those pumps is that you have to take them out and soak them in vinegar at least once a month. if not they will be ruined in short order in a hard water environment!

Make sure you clean them regulary - especially if you dose calcium/kalk. I have gone through 3 mag 9's in 2 years.

Sheesh, I have been running my Mags submerged for almost 14 months and only cleaned then twice. No calcium buildup at all. I use B-Ionic for calcium/alk supplements. IMHO, I think maintenance depends on your water chemistry more than the pump.

I love em.

they actually ship them with directions now requiring monthly cleaning for the warranty. . .
