Filter socks

I'm cycling my new tank and have never used filter socks until now. How do you know when it's time to change them?

They will become dirty and the water will not pass thru them. Eventually the water will overflow and spill out the top. Hope that helps

+1. it should be changed frequently/cleaned long before it gets clogged.

also get a couple extra ones so you will always have a clean one on hand to replace the dirty one

just in case, you can wash them with a little bleach, no soap.

Don't wait till they clog. Change them every other day.

I was definitely getting tired of chaging filter socks every couple of days. I now only use them when I'm moving things around in the tank or pulling out algae since all the debris usually makes its way to the sump. The trade off is that every now and again I have to vacuum the sump intake chamber but I don't mind doing that.
