Ok. Been lirking here for a month feeling bad that I openned a can of worms.

A while back I put out a public request for information about Imperial exporting. I got the 3rd degree about giving away trade secrets, destroying businesses, being a spy, being an insider, ect. ect. ect. Well I as looking around to buy some of those ethical fishies and found the link I was looking for.

Here's the PUBLIC reference that got me asking about Imperial.

From the seacrop webite:

http://www.seacrop.com/Fish/fish.htm

Ferdinand Cruz resigned from the Marine Aquarium Council in late 2002, and I started communicating with him about his trainings and which exporters I could trust. He knows, because he is basically the only net trainer that is out in the field everyday with the collectors. Ferdinand told me he has brought another cyanide free exporter online- Imperial.

So the net training guy also owns an export business?

No, far from it. He has helped Imperial by introducing them to several of the villages he has trained, in return for an obligation to pay the collectors a bit more than the going (PTFEA-defined) rate.

Ferdinand helped in his sister's export business back in the 1980's, but that has long since closed.

I swear, it's this kind of flat out misinterpretation that causes so many of the problems in here. Where in the world do I even imply that Ferdinand owns an export business????

Mary,

On reading the sentence, the verbage is loose enough that a couple of different interpretations or assumptions can be made. Language can be a slippery beast...

To me, it does not directly imply it, nor does it preclude it. It is a bit unclear.
There are better ways to say the same thing, without that implication being a possibility.

For example:

Ferdinand has told me about another exporter, Imperial, who he has helped, introducing them to the net-caught collectors he has trained.
Imperial now deals with these net-caught collectors only.

This establishes Ferdie as a trainer with connections to exporters, not as a budding export business...

Slippery and imprecise this language, English...

But if Ferdinand was an exporter, why would he be directing me to buy from 2 other exporters? That is what makes no sense. Sometimes language requires a little discernment and common sense. No exporter is going to tell me to buy from some other exporter. The entire content must be read and put into perspective- not just pull out a sentence or two and twist them out of context.

Mary,

I ask a simple question and you accuse of me of being unable to read and lacking common sense. I wasn't clear on the relationship Ferd had with Imperial so I asked a question, ok? Where were you when I was being attacked and called crazy when I asked for help on where I saw the name Imperial earlier?

So Ferd doesn't own Imperial. How is he financing the training that he is currently doing? Is he working for another outfit that is like MAC? If so, I'd like to know who they are because that outfit deserves our support. Or does Ferd somehow make income as a middleman between the collectors and the exporters?

Thanks and please be patient with me,
Donny

Donny,

I just spoke to Ferdie on this and other topics last week.
He is basically working for himself at the moment, and living off of his savings, training on the cheap. He sleeps in the nipa huts alongside the collectors, eating what they eat. You can get by in the Philippines for very, very little money if you really 'go native'. His biggest expense is gasoline, getting to areas he is working with, then food.

He swears to me that he is not making money as a middleman.
Speculating out loud, it would not surprise me if he leaned on an exporter for funding for some supplies needed by the collectors, but I do not think he would lean on either party for a salary.

While Ferdie has been working on his own, I fully expect that this situation will not last forever. Joining an NGO would help legitimize his effort, and get him more support. I'm positive that this news will be announced here if and when it happens.

Regards.

Mike, I agree with you Ferdinand is not in the export business. My telephone conversations with Ferdie also indicate he is working with the fishermen as you described. He has formed a new NGO that will support the net-training and other community-based programs with the fishers. I a getting reports on the high quality of the net-caught fish coming from the collectors trained by Ferdinand.
