a friend of mine gave me a frag from his tank which he was tearing down to move,(school, not enough time to attend to it,tank going downhill)and it's pretty big and nice looking, except for the fact that it has a bit of recession, just a little bit though..I put it in my tank,(55 gallon,20 sump)and acclimated it over a couple of days under my 220w PC's...the questions I have are these: 1:will the recession heal, given good water flow,(sea-swirl,mag 7,~500 gph)and my paricular lighting(4X55w PC,10 K/actinic)if placed close to the top, nearer the light?2:what kind of supplements could I possibly incorporate if the need is determined,or foods should I feed?My tank and myself are relatively new to the reefing hobby, and I hadn't planned on this species until further down the road, but I figured I would give it a shot...I wish I had a picture, the little guy is great looking, except for slight recession,of course...(really slight)Or am I just a little paranoid because this is my first sps?

What kind of acro is it? What are your Ca and Alk levels? What are all the other water params? I just lost an acro under 2x250 watt MH lights. It depends on the species....it may make it but from what I have learned and heard MH lighting is best.

FWIW I keep an acro under VHO lighting and it is growing pretty quickly.
Mine is a frag from a parent with a long history of tank-raised frags. Perhaps that helps.

Joey, what kind of lighting did the frag come from??? The most important thing for you to do for this frag, IMO, is keep the calcium and alk. levels as stable as possible. This is what these corals have to have. Your lighting may be a problem, even placed high in the tank. I think moe is right about frags that come from vho or pc lighting being able to adapt to that same lighting condition easier that metal halide down to vho or pc's. If the tissue is receeding you need to watch this very closely. If it starts to regrow you will know it. If it begans to comtinue to receed you may not be able to stop it. SPS corals are a lot more demanding to thrive in captive environments. A well aged system is a must too. JMO...

Hi,I've checked on the little bugger, polyps are out pretty good,I guess,it appears that some of the recession areas are showing new growth(?)but I have a rather untrained eye

Any way,I will test the tank parameters tonight for calcium and alk,as I am pretty religious with maintenance, and try to take a digital image to post so you experts can tell me what you think...Thanks for the help, though, and here are my water parameters otherwise....
Ammonium-0
Nitrite-0
Nitrate-<12.5 mg/L
temp-82
salinity-1.023.5
pH-8-8.3
circulation-~550 gph
KH-10
Anything else I missed I have not tested for yet, this tank was born on june 26,(my birthday, too)so it's still pretty young...any other advice would be much appreciated
