I can take them and give them a great home, but i would have to work out meeting up. Not too thrilled about driving to jersey. I would love to help you out with this, let me know, steve.

What if I can have her bring them to our hospital in Hells Kitchen? We are at 55th between 9th and 10th so I will ask her if she can do this.

These turtles are being sold by the thousands in the same green containers... It is unfortunate that people do not realize that they need specialized care. I picked up two of them for my daughters, but I also set up a turtle tank with a filter, 5000K light and a "dock" where they can climb out of the water, dry out completely and get some "sun" (light).

I hope you find them a good home. If anyone needs some pointers on setting up the turtle tank cheaply feel free to shoot me a PM.

I also bought two of these little guys about 2.5 years ago. They've grown to about 8inches each and are now in a 90g  From the people I've spoken to, not many realize those little turtles get THAT big.

I would take the little guys but I think my turts would beat them up :(

is hard to resist buying these turtles, just hope everyone realize if they're under 4", they're illegal to sell or have, make sure your kids wash their hands after playing w/ them, they carry a bacteria similar to salmonella.

Illegal to sell, not to have. Also, the risk of Salmonela is grossly over stated. The breeders now use a process where the eggs are treated for salmonella before they hatch. All of these turtles are ordered from breeders in boxes of 500.

The real danger is that when they outgrow the tank people tend to want to release then in a local pond or lake. DONT. Red Earred Sliders are not native to NY (Painted turtles ARE) and have become somewhat of a problem.

These guys can get to be pretty big. 10 inches is an average size for a fully grown RES.

On the up side, these guys can get to be very tame when you raise them from the hatching stage and they are a lot of fun to observe and feed.

I really enjoy coming on MR, sharing and absorbing information, but the problem with this site is that people can post anything that they want responsiblily, or irresponssibly. I strongly suggest people to do a research before posting on here, your comments can lead to health hazzards to many.
I've been in the pet trade for a long time, went through the health academy, these turtles are not just being breed in the States, sometimes they're being imported illegally without documentation through the borders, and they do carry a bacteria/virus similar to salmonella. The only reason why you can have them at home, is that fish and wildlife are not going to be knocking on a residential door. I personally adore these turtles, had them my self, not telling people not to have them. but, PLEASE WASH YOUR KID'S HANDS AFTER DEALING WITH THEM. thats all.

Kids should not be handling turtles anyway and we should be washing our hands after handling pets each and every single time. But the issue of Salmonella and turtles has been known since the 70's and it is not just with hatchlings. In fact, hatchlings are probably safer to handle than adult turtles because of how the eggs are treated by the hatcheries.

The majority of smuggled turtles are rarer types that are protected by CITES. RES and Painted turtles are too inexpensive locally for a smuggler to risk getting caught dealing with. Here is a US based wholesaler offering them as cheap as $1.25 when purchased in lots of 300:

http://www.scserp.com/SCS_Price_List.htm

Direct from the hatcheries they can be purchased for as little as 25 cents each.

Another good (short) article on Salmonella and turtles can be found here:

The ban on baby turtles was a knee jerk reaction to a problem in my opinion. Regardless, it is still illegal to sell them and the law is the law.
