does any one know how much po4 is caused from unrinsed frozen food ? i use P E MYSIS and there seems to be a oily film left on the surface of my tank after feeding , its from the food . i've heard that rinsing the food cuts down on the po4 , could this be a significant sourse of po4 or just a higher level of nutrient that the fish dont eat , its too small for them to eat ,but what about the corals is it food sourse for them and noyhing to worry about my po4 reads av..01ppm . any opinions or facts would be cool !

well i thawed it out and rinsed for 30 seconds or so and when i poured the food into the tanks i still could see the fish oil on the surface ! seems a bit less maybe , i might just be optimistic .sounds like its still up in the air any more opinions might be helpful ,but facts would really be cool !

if you have a syringe ( one w/o the needle - usually from test kits) you could try doing wat you just did and then put the food in another small container of water then suction the food from underwater to avoid the surface film oils.

I thaw mine in a cup using tank water. Then I pour it all off into a net and rinse with rodi water until it runs clear (I do squeeze the water out)..then feed.

Wrasseman, what did you use to measure your Po4?

Oil is not phosphates IIRC but fat from the fish. Whether it makes a difference or not to rinse - regarding phosphates or anything else - I cant say one way or another.

i had my po4 and all other water paramiters checked by a friend (chemist) that works for the water department so its extremly accurate ,he does my three systems once a week ,kinda sneeks my stuff in .and he cks all kinds of things that are of no concern to me ,showing off i guess ..01ppm is great isnt it ? i just was seeing the oily surface and wondering .i have been ckng tecnique and rinsing off makes a difference just didnt know if this could build up nutrient levels or if it gets ingested by my corals. food for thought tyvm dave
