general lighting question

hello all. i am preparing to switch my tank over to 400's as some of you might know already. but as a general lighting question-- what sps corals should not be placed near the top of the tank because of to much light? i have heard that there are sps corals that will turn white due to to much lighting. i am planning acuporas and clams as of now. so any answers to this question would be greatly appreciated

Naturally, deepwater acroporas would need to be shaded or acclimated (if even possible) to the brighter lights. As for other SPS and non-deepwater acroporas, you'd have to verify (at species level) what habitats/depths they are typically found on the reef. Those coral could probably be easily acclimated to brighter lights without damage/bleaching.

Acropora humilis - Exposed upper reef slopes and reef flats.
Acropora horrida - Turbid water around fringing reefs.

thanks deanos for that info. is there a list here on mr that has that info? i would really be interested in reading it before i start this. because i now have all the things neccessary to start this new project. or links

With 400watters, I would be thinking the reverse: "Which corals WANT to be up top?" Unless your tank is prohibitively deep, most SPS should be happy wherever you place them in that tank. All this is assuming proper acclimation to the increase in lighting.
