Can someone fill me in, as to how to make a clam thrive. I have never had a clam, and the other day a fella in the apartment by the one I was visiting, was moving and taking down his tank. Long story short I jumped on the clam price without pondering the situation. It was only under PC's and I do not even know what species it is. I now have it under a 175MH but I can not find any info how how to properly care for them. Params are all normal for a reef, but my question is placement. The fella told me to place it in a PVC pipe in the sand. However, I do not like seeing the PVC and when I had the clams foot exposed, my potters angle nipped at it.
Now in the sand with no PVC, it is digging it's way to the bottom. Any help with helping this guy thrive would be much appreciated.
Thank You Ladies and Gents.
J.

How deep is your tank? That will have an impact on how much light you need. How do you supplement calcium (calcium reactor/Kalk stirrer?), as it will need it to grow in all likelihood.

Clams will need excellent water conditions as well, what sort of filtration do you have (and by that I mean "how good is your protein skimmer/water change regime?).

Others will be better placed to advise on placement.

A pick is in the works! I figured that would be my best bet to get all possible knowledge. As for the tank setup, it is a 46bow with a "ETSS 6000" skimmer for filtration (Plenty Big). I am not worried about calc because I use B-Ionic once a week to make up for anything consumed.
Now my wheels are spinning.
Thanks Guys,
J.

To narrow this down a little bit, can someone help me with the placement of this clam? I have been told to put him in a piece of PVC but why. It is not in a piece of PVC right now, but it is currently digging its way to the bottom. I am placing it in PVC today, should it be a sealed cap type of piece, or will any piece of piping work fine? I do not want the worms to eat him so let me know please.
Thanks
J.

My guess on the PVC is if you have to move it. When on the rocks they attach themselves and stay there good - hard to move.

I have heard of using an seashell or a small piece of LR for them to adhere to. It is digging to find a stable place to attach to I think.

AFAIK, different clams like different spots in the tank, some like up on the rocks others in the sand, which is probably why people are asking for a picture.

That having been said, even if you posted one I couldn't ID which clam it is  as the above statement is the sum of my knowledge about clams.
