Hi,

Have you ever wondered why am I in this hobby, I love the hobbie,but sometimes I think about all the money just to keep a small piece of a reef in my house. I have two tanks and fixing to setup a 200, I just can't stop, on average I spend 100.00 a week on the tanks and a couple of hours a day involved with them. and the power bill is high because of all the MH lights.

What drives you in this hobby?

On the bottom of my reef tank lies my brain and my wallet. If i ever get them beck ill let you know.

I haven't spent much lately (whew) but I know what you mean....my mother shook her head 12 years ago when we forked out $70 on a FISH!

Then we had children and put the tank away for a few years...took a couple of years of atrition for all the livestock we had to leave us, but then we mothballed the tank..my mom said, "Why don't you sell that?"

SELL?????? SURELY YOU JEST!!!

We moved a year an a half ago....to a bigger house, new country and we brought the tank with us (Mom: wouldn't it be cheaper to sell that one and buy one down there? NOOOOOO!)...

Now I've got 6 tanks running, 2 more in the garage, and a couple of buckets, basins, jars with various and sundry cultures growing...

It's a passion.

my girlfriend once asked me, "don't you think that thing is a money pit?" No I said, it's a hobby and hobbies cost money. It's all relative. Just think of the guys whose hobby is dragster racing or something. That would be a heck of a lot more expensive. The desire to master the hobby is what drives me; it's extremely challenging and rewarding!

It's our hobby and desire to get better that drives us. I'm currently at war with myself. On the one hand I know I shold save money for first child on the way, expected in 2 months, but on the other I want to upgrade to MH lighting. Hopefully I will be able to refinance the house in a few weeks, reduce mortgage payment and afford to do both

Until then, I will keep up my efforts to raise some SPS and a small maxima under 4 96w pc and 2 55w pc lighting. SOme SPS have showed a lot of growth these last 6 months, but the desire to keep the rare/more difficult sps will win out in the end and some day I will get me that big MH hood I always wanted.

Yes, try being a college student who owes parents a little bit of money. Instead of, should I buy this or that? it's more like, "Should I eat out or skip dinner and be able to afford shipping on the mushrooms I want to get?" *Lol*

BTW, I'm expecting to be able to recieve those mushrooms sometime this month!

whenever my children spend an hour watching my tank instead of the TV I know it is money well spent. I think the color and variety stimulate their little brains and they all get straight A's so i just tell my wife its an educational expense Anyone know how to write one off on their taxes ?

It's the "god" factor. No other hobby gives you as much control over nature. Thus all of the challenges that are met are sort of a reinforcing motivation to continue in the hobby. You literally control every aspect of your box of water.

I thik it all comes down to I am a sadistic basterd. My hobbies are Surfing, Golf, Scuba, Reefs and tropical FW. Oh yea Now we are building a barn for two Mustangs that may just kick me in the head and get it over with

Well I would say i agree with one of the first posts that said "it is a hobby and it costs money". We all spend our extra money on something, the reef just happens to be for us. I think in my line of work it is nice to come home and see some results that doesn't give me a hard time or talk back. I find it very relaxing and it keeps me out of trouble...

I think my original driving force is that I've been scuba diving since I was 14, but I only have the opportunity to dive on rare occasions, and reach the tropics even less frequently. Keeping a reef allows me to have a piece of the ocean at my home and reminds me every day how amazing our oceans really are.
