if you gotta do sand go to the lfs or order from online aragonite sand... its the safest way to go... i do not trust any home depot or lowes sand...

just a simple question i see your trying to do the cheap way around everything why is that when you are going to invest so much money into the hobby....

i used to think like you in the beginning as well but have learned from experience that buying stuff cheap and especially home depot sand is not the way to go... there was only 1 sand at home depot that was good for our tanks which is not found at home depot no more...

I just purchased 5 bags of aragonite sand from Dr Fosters and Smith for my uncle. I think they are the best place to go because they won't charge you an overweight fee. I wouldn't use HD sand either. Who knows what else is in there. At least with Aragonite Sand you know what its intended purpose is. I'd play it safe!

You used to be able to get an acceptable sand from home depot labled as SouthDown. I havn't seen it there in years, your better off buying sand labled for Aquarium use.

Ditto, I got lucky and got my sand when they had it 6 years ago. I'm sorry I dumped it. I should've just rinsed it.:frown: But, I do still have some in my FOWLR.:tongue1:

Good luck with your tank.

Again Ditto.........:banghead:

yili, I've been in this hobby for around 6 years, and I still shy away from giving advice. And I would definitely not give anyone the advice to go to the beach and steal the sand or water for that matter.
Especially with all the pollutants that we have going on...:frown:
