I believe it is usually recommended to be 2-5 watts per gallon. Personally I like having 2 heaters plugged in, this way if one breaks you still have one working (most likely). Eheim jager makes a great glass heater, fluval series is good, I have gone through my fair share of glass and plastic heaters so now I just go straight to titanium probes and a controller.
