For the second time in a month my Quiet One 3000 has stopped. Fortunately both times I was home, the first time I got about a gallon of water on the floor, this time I managed to stay dry (lowered the baffles in the sump to allow for more backflow volume).

It's not hot to the touch & I have no idea why it stopped. The first time it did this I opened it up & the impeller magnet & housing looked like it had some calcification in there (not that I know what that would look like).

Can anyone recommend a reliable pump for external use that uses 3/4" in & outlet fittings? Thanks!

I've not idea wutsup with your pump but I can recommend you the eheim(great reviews). check out the eheim 1262 or 1260 but is 1" in 3/4 out though but I'm sure u can make it work.

btw if u like eheim 1262(900gph) check out this thread dont miss it

This is Davidl919, I can't log Daceman out.... As far as your 3000 The quiet one has some type of feature that detects backflow and then shuts down automatically, how long/high is your return pipe?.... as far as the eheim I have never seen one used outside... every eheim I have seen is in sump... try the mag 9, blue line, or iwakki. But just in case the direct Eheim (expensive) replacement for the quiet 3000 is eheim 1260 both rated at around 750 gph.

the 3000 are(780gph) and the 1260 are (635gph maybe a little slow) but not sure what gph drain he's running, that's y i mention 1262(900) I've use Mag but had the rusty screw problem. then switch to eheim and i do believe you get what u paid for. no offences tho.

btw u can also drill small holes on the return near surface to stop the backflow.

some info for ehiem

Thanks for all of the replies.

Dace..uh,..Dave :), looked into some pumps before posting, looks like the Mag9 is 1/2" in/out, plus the rust issue. Didn't really want to spend too much, but if I ever get back to work I'd like to know my pump is reliable.

Right now I'm running the Q1 at full blow, 4' head w/only 1 90deg elbow. The drain is 1" adjustable. The Q1 is rated at 780gph 10' max head. So at 4' it's prolly coming in somewhere around 5-550gph.

To be honest, I would just get another Q1 if the general concensus was that this is a fluke. I did read of this happening to someone else because of heat, but mine doesn't feel hot. Steve, I will look into the Eheims, thanks!

quiet1s r known for the auto shutoff when overheating. to see if this is the problem, try to provide plenty of cool air to the pump. i added a fan to blow on the pump + vent my sump area n that seem to solve that problem.

You know, thinking about it, this seems to have started when I added the sponge on the pump's intake strainer. Maybe, when the sponge gets really clogged, this causes the heat problem. I'll try to keep the sponge clean & see if this helps also, next step would be putting a fan under there.

Thanks!

I think you should get rid of the sponge. It puts a lot of strain on a pump thats lushing (or pulling) that much water. I don't think the Mag or any pump for that matter is made to deal with the resistance of pulling the water through a sponge. Thats why its always better for external pumps to have an intake pipe a bit larger in diameter.

Anyone second this opinion? IIRC the manufaturer of many pumps recommend some sort of strainer be used on the intake to prevent objects from entering the pump.

I don't notice that much of a difference in flow with the sponge on or off, except for if the sponge is heavily clogged. I put the 100 micron filter sock back on the drain & removed the cheato from my fuge to see if that helps with my algae problem also.
