I bought a male lyretail anthia (Ps. squamipinnis) about 3 months ago. It's the only fish in a 55 gal. After about two months, it stopped eating vigorously and it stopped fighting with it's reflection. I've tried many types of foods to have him eat including live mysis shrimps but with no success.
I then added a yellow wrasse hoping the competition for food would induce him to feed. No luck.
I bought two juvenile female squamipinnis on the advice of wetwebmedia and introduced the females in the tank today. No luck. The new females do not bother him, nor does he pick on either of them.
Anyone out there have the same experience with a male lyretail? it seems he has given up, or at least he's acting like his reflection "beat" him as the King Lyretail of the tank.
Second, what can I do with him? In time, the alpha juvenile female will start bossing him around (that's if he last that long). His color still looks good, but his weight loss is noticeable. He still comes to me, especially at the feeding station, but he does not eat.
I will entertain giving him away, but what kind of system would he have a chance to live?
Tank parameters are all good (NH3-0; NO3-0, etc...)
