i have a mated pair of clowns and a cardinal ,cleaner shrimp and a small coral banded shrimp he has never touched a crab before
could there be something lurking in the rocks that can do this ? if so what could it be ?

Hermits will kill each other off for territory as well. Keep this in mind. In all of our tanks there is a general theme called "Survival of the Fittest". Hermits kill snails and each other, and fish and shrimp and vice versa.

As Deanos says "The only predictable fish is a dead one." This applies to inverts as well.
