Hermits killed my anemone crab?

After not seeing the anemone crab in two days I spotted his carpace in the back of the tank in the sand bed. I couldnt see the rest of it so I'm not sure if it was eaten or its a molt or what. Would my hermits ( blue and scarlet but all small ) killed it? I assume if it died of other causes they would scavenge it. Is there a way to tell if its a mold or carcass without waiting to find him alive somewhere else?
