OK! I want to do somthing I've never seen done haha. I just fragged a sarco leather last night into 3 frags and mounted them on rubble. Here's what I wanna do. When they grow out I wanna trade give one to a RDO member (provided he or she has a good home) . Isn't a big part of our hobby about conservation? Everyone says yes, but it seems its all about how many corals we can cram into our tanks and how much $$ we can make. So let's start fragging various things and sharing :) Let's face it... we can spare a frag or two.

Give the sarco a few months to attach and heal.

Actually no, the hobby itself isn't about conservation, whether or not any particular hobbiest wants to take that route is up to them.

Good luck on that trading though, shipping costs alone will be prohibively expensive for some of the more common corals.

My advice look for local clubs and the like, that would be a better place to start.

I think that you have a really good idea. SFS did bring up a valid oint though, shipping cost would be rather expensive. Perhaps you could find people in your somewhat local area and help them out. Unless the people were willing to pay for shipping on the fragged item. Assuming shipping is not the same cost as buying a whole piece on their own lfs. Put it out there, i am sure more people than you think will like the idea.

Plenty of people buy common corals online daily. I'd suspect many would LOVE to pay for shipping for a captive grown specimen. 90% or more of hobbyists aren't reef snobs, just most the ones online really

I get most of my stuff from locals. I already have one guy that will let me shop his tank when I am ready. I only get corals from the LFS if I can not find it anywhere else.

Almost all my corals are from locals. Granted I drive 2 hours one way to consider someone local though lol. I have bought a few online that are aquacultured or multi generation captivity. Like everyone has said, a 10 dollar frag ceases to be a deal with 40 dollar shipping.

I do not know any locals. However, if there are any here PM me I am willing to trade.

We are (ASMAS) somewhat local to you (you're not far from Ranger!) and our club is great. The frag swap yesterday provided me with 19 different (26, if you count repeated  ) frags, along with various raffle prizes (might not have been as good as Ranger but I won stuff for the first time, EVER!), great food, and awesome fellow reefer conversations. People there are very down to earth and friendly. Come up, have fun with us, meet some new folks, and get to go to Cap Bay and Imagine Ocean again! :D

I may have made out pretty good yesterday lol. With the tank, supplements and corals, all told it was a good day. Well worth the drive.

Snow,

Eventually, I'll put together a nationwide RDO Frag Swap. I was thinking about shipping costs the other day. With so many requests for different categories (rare, SPS, LPS, softies), I think we'll be able to break it up among regions. That way, we'll be able to take advantage of the USPS Express Mail service. If we stick to shipping in our region and submit our frags to the post office by the 11:20am cutoff, we can guarantee next day delivery.

What do you guys think?

Ranger, I think you made it out great! And we had fun while at it too!!!

Karl, worth a try. Would it be requested corals or that previous idea where it's more like a surprise frag?

I'd leave that to you guys. Some expressed concern with a random drawing, where they might end up with something they already have.

If we were to do a request, I'd at least want the exchange to be with eachother to keep it simple. This will also mean that the shipping cost both ways will be about the same.
