sup guys , been a long time since i post anything . well i just got my rodi from coral life and i cant wait to start usin it tommorrow but the only thing is that i have that slime stuff on my rocks. my tank is about 1yr old ive been using tap water ever since . so im guessin that i must have a lot of phospate in my tap water. even when i change my water i still get it back . usually my tap water nitrate is sometimes 20 ppm which is crazy!!!
any way i was thinkin about scrubbin my rocks so that slime can come off. my friend said that i should do that but my only concern is if im goin to lose alot of bacteria?? what should i do . pls help . will be usin my coral life pure-flo 2 rodi tommorrow.

Unless your rocks are totally non-porous, while you may lose some bacteria from the surface of the rock, you will not lose all the bacteria that is within your rocks.

On the other hand, you're going to have to do lots of water changes (dilutions) before your water feels all the benefits of the RO/DI water... What pace are you planning on doing the dilutions?

Good luck!

J scrub the rocks in your old tank water, after all the slime is off, you hook up some fresh R.O water(salt of course) and let them soak for a while with frequent water changes until all your phos readings are down.do that with no light and you'll be back in the game in no time.good luck.

Great idea for the switch to RO/DI water. The question I have is where do you live to have 20 ppm nitrates in your tap water? That's double allowable EPA standards. The new pure-flo will help get your tank healthy. I would just think that maybe you need to check your household water supply to make sure you stay healthy.
BTW, I have the pure-flo as well. Works well, and even after over a year (OK not a large tank so not that much water through it) the output is 0 ppm. I still changed the DI resin last night because while it's still working (0 ppm) I can't see how bacterial growth would not be occur for so long, so I look at it as proactive maintenance. The pre-filter and carbon block I change every 4-6 months as they turn pretty dark with time.

Good luck.
