Forgive me...just a random thought I had today. Long story-short, I did my high school research project (back in '99-00) about hypoxia in the LI Sound. So I was wondering if scraping algae off of the glass could have the same effect on your tank? It probably is a stretch, but just curious if anyone knows about that algae reaping your tank of dissolved oxygen?:eek:rangehat

with skimmers injecting so much oxygen into the water and all the surface water movement, i think the bigger issue is people with tightly sealed home, especially smokers trapping all the co2 in the house lowering the PH of the tank

Hypoxia in the Sound occurred when the abundant algal bloom started to die...as it sunk, sank, whatever to the bottom of the Sound it apparently sucked up all of the DO in the water on the way down.

To the OP- are you saying that its better to leave the algae on your glass bc scraping it will send the algae all over the tank? I guess I'm just no following your logic on what scraping has to do with it.

Gotcha. I wasn't aware of this study. I usually try and scrape the algae often enough so that it doesn't add up. I'm also assuming (could be wrong) that the filtration system takes care of most of this algae anyway.
