Just say I was looking to get a tank no bigger than 40gal. Sump? No sump? I am undecided. What are the top ones now in production. I tend to over size my skimmers so recommendations for ones good to 60-70 gal would be fine also. I also don't mind paying a few extra bucks for quality when the extra money actually get you extra quality.

Pics and links would be nice.

We've been using these at work lately. For the money, it'd be very hard to beat. Though for a little more money you could find a better in-sump skimmer, maybe a Euro-reef or another Octopus.

Deltec hang-on is probably still top dog for HOBs. If you go with a manufactured tank, Euro-Reef makes a nano skimmer that's nice (and much more affordable). There's a lot of choices for in-sump skimmers, and a lot of opinions for what's best. There's mini Bubble Kings, Vertex Cones, ATBs, Deltecs, etc. But IMO, most skimmers these days are all very capable. Read this article: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2009/1/aafeature2

I have owned the Euro Reef skimmers in the past. The old 60 cube had the RS-80 and my 160 had the RS-250. If I was to go with a sump I would like to get the RS-80 or comparable.

I have made no concrete decision to start a new tank. I am leaning that way. Not having a tank is a bummer. Need to get out there and see what is what. I will stick to 40 gal or less all SPS tank with just a few fish.

I'm not a fan of the look of HOB skimmers, overflows etc. Just my humble opinion of course.

'm not either, but considering it would be a small tank I was going to atleast look at going sumpless with HOB gear.

Even on 40 I would go with a sump, it just makes life so much easier (and a nice clean looking tank)...besides, you know that 40 will morph into a 120 in a year or so :P

Nope. I had a big tank and really do not want that much work again.
