How do I ajust my skimmer???

I cleaned my skimmer today its realy pumping but I think it is out of ajustment the is a valve where the water comes out. how hight should the water get in the skimmer. the more I close the valve the higher the water gets should it get right to the top of the skimmer but not into the part where the gook is collected. what I meen is if I took the collection part off it should not overflow but stat just to the top?

it a needle wheel no name that came with my tank after a good cleaning will it ned to breakin again??

was it skimming before you cleaned it ? if so dont touch it, it will start again

I took The whole thing apart played with the valve cleaned the whole thing! the only thing I didnt supper clean was the colection cup
