How do I break Live Rock?

Can I just get a hammer and a (clean)chizzel?
I loive in an apt, so I need to do it in a small area.

Get a chisel with a point and put it in a hole or crevice and give it a good tap. Don't hit it too hard, unless you want a lot of little pieces.

It all depends on the density of the rock. If it is very porous, like Marshall Island, Fiji or Kaelini, then the hammer/chisel will work. BTW, if you use a wood chisel you stand a good chance of damaging the sharp edge. What you should use is called a mason's 'cold chisel', it's designed for exactly what you're intending to use it for.

If the rock is more dense, like Caribbean, then you might have to drill a series of holes then use the hammer/chisel method.

Also, pre-drilling some holes in strategic places can help you sculpt the rock to help you aquascape more precisely.

I've used a crowbar, a screwdriver, the pointy end of the hammer (also called the claws) all split the rock well.

Put a towel down and it's easier to clean up the mess.

I would get a LARGE heavy trash bag and do it in there, have someone hold the rim of the bag up while you have your arms in there breaking the rock. A hammer and a large flat head screwdriver you are willing to ruin is all you need.
